When did the playground become the battleground?

Paris

It’s funny how most of life’s most complex problems seem to have their most obvious solutions in childhood-related things.

Think for a minute of all the times when we were kids and played in the local playground. We didn’t care that the other kids wore the wrong coloured socks, or sat on the swing backwards, or spoke a different language or was a different race, colour, religion. We had someone else to play with and have fun together. We didn’t require they sign a no-fault injury disclaimer, we didn’t make them change into the right Bob the Builder or Dora the Explorer gear, we didn’t require that they showed us a minimum expertise on the see saw to be able to play. We just got along.

Yet, when we get older, we somehow get more picky, we get more polarizing, we get more opinionated, and we end up bitter and twisted. Guy Sebastian’s latest song “Get Along” has some lyrics that are particularly applicable to the present-day trouble makers on social media.

“And when all worlds collide

All they know is to divide

And it’s easy if they’re faceless

To hate the other side

And the others caught between

Are the only ones to bleed

And the ones they leave behind

Can only sit and cry”

This forum is called Punter Planet, and is mostly geared towards punters regaling tales of their conquests to each other. Bit like the old shared tales with mates at the pub. A place for the guys to hang out and review the girls and tell each other about which girl does what. And just like lots of these tales being told at pubs, there is the odd embellishment of the details. After all, never let the truth stand in the way of a good story! But at the same time, it’s also a way for the girls to check out the guys. The girls look at what the guys say, their tastes, their style, their attitude, and the way they treat others. In so many ways, it’s the punting version of the playground.

But there seems to be an undercurrent of venom and invective that I’ve been noticing. There are several individuals who have decided to pick on their fellow punter for their reviews, for the way they write things, for the fun they have, for them actually having fun at all. I can’t help but think that these poor jealous guys are throwing tantrums because they aren’t having as much fun as the rest, that they find pleasure in hitting out at the ones who are. Well, just like in the playground, when one kid starts to push the other around with malice, it crosses the line from play to bullying. And there is no place in society for bullying. It’s ugly, it’s vindictive, it’s signs of a weaker character who isn’t mature enough to handle differences. And once the playground becomes a battleground, the fun disappears.

So, personally, I take my lead from the lyrics in Pink’s “Funhouse”.

“This used to be a Funhouse

But now it's full of evil clowns

It's time to start the countdown

I'm gonna burn it down, down, down

I'm gonna burn it down

9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, fun”

And finally, my plea for a return to mutual respect comes from the chorus in Guy’s song again ...

“Dear God, dear soul

Dear Mary, Mohammed

Can we all just get along

Can we all just get along

Dear heart, dear life

Dear soldier, dear martyr

Where did we go wrong,

Can we all just get along”

Well said, but then you have always had a nice handle on life and overcoming its multitude of hurdles, (Love the new Avatar)

It becomes very easy to be negative, faceless and attack from behind a keyboard.

PP is getting quiet large and shows punters are from all sides of society and some bring their worst here. As you say Paris the undercurrent is growing, the 'controllers' think this is their playground like they do workplaces and other social settings, other than mods stopping the worst abuse best we can do is call them out or ignore them, after all they are oxygen thieves.

100% agree with you!

I have seen this happen on other forums and guess what, other forum is going down!

We all contribute to the success of a website like this, even the guy that write reviews in the most imperfect way (by some others standards!)

Nice blog, Paris. Couldn't have said it better if I'd written it myself.

I liked your use of the lyrics to make the point, after all music has reflected us for a long time. I am new to PP and I haven't seen it. I guess we are all human and bring various values, past experiences and paradigms with us. The issue is not to stand by and let it happen.

thxs paris.

Bully's are a tiny minority on forums. They are bunch of angry people who who contribute little to forums and only focus on the negative. Unfortunately it happens all to often here. If they dont like the way things are run why not just fuck off and leave PP alone? Why the fuck would you want to waste time attacking people via a forum?? the same people who do it never add anything useful either.

Your right what ur saying Paris , we are all different though otherwise it'd be boring :). Some of us are serious , some are light hearted , some are shit stirrers etc etc. words on here like texts can be misinterpreted , I've done it for sure & I'm sure many others which can lead to harsh words .

It shouldn't happen , sometimes outside stressful influences in our life can lead us to view things almost negatively if you let it.

In 2012 I did , not on here , but I let some very negative stuff affect me & my conduct a little. It cost me a good friend which I may regret for a long time. Cause & Effect I call it .

So I guess I'm saying if we can all be a little empathetic & not quick to judge or respond in a neg way it can diffuse B4 we emotionally sting a response. I sound like Dr Phil lol :)

Paris, i think you have it dead right.

And i completely agree with clandestine's comment.

I don't care what some faceless avatar might say to, or about me, as I tend to assume such people have some persona; grudge against the world.

I do understand careless comments can hurt others over the internet.

Classy post from a truly classy lady and a very lovely one to boot. Fully agree and let the fun times resume

Yep, I agree.

There a group for punters and WLs who pick on a particular WL and now the followers have started picking on her too.

SHAME! FOR SAME!

"we didn’t care that the other kids wore the wrong coloured socks, or sat on the swing backward..." Well when I was growing up we'd get thumped for going on the swing backward and if you cried bully you'd get thumped harder. but that didn't stop kids from swinging backwards.

Punters are arguably half the population so of course people will embellish stories and throw their dicks on the table for a measuring contest.

Shouldn't we just carry on doing what we do because we are wise enough to know we are not going to change base human nature on a forum which serves to provide information on how to access the most (de)based pleasures. Doh!

Anyway with the whole antibullying crap we hear about now in wider society I believe it is all just for show. It hasn't really changed anything it's just made a few dogooders feel better.
